Okay guys, let’s get down to brass tacks on giving the best man wedding toast.  You may be getting a little squeamish and nervous.  All that is natural and it will go away in time.  This is one time that screwing up is not an option.  Your best friend only gets married once (well, let’s hope only once!).  Do him a favor and prepare a funny and memorable speech.  Just don’t think that you can wing on the Big Day.  Do a little home work and you will be the talk of his wedding for years.  Don’t worry, I am not going to get you to sign up for Toastmasters or a Dale Carnegie public speaking course.  I never wanted to wing it and after my first screw up, I used this online help guide-Best Man Wedding Toasts.  It worked real well for me because I was totally clueless as what to do and say.

Where do you start with the toast to the bride and groom?

I have given over 3 best man toasts. My first being a complete disaster because I did not use a wedding toast guide or template.  Honestly, I did not even know that I was supposed to give a toast.  With access to the Internet, finding an example is about as easy as tying your shoes.  There are many great websites that have complete templates and tips on how to give the opening toast to the wedding dinner.  Best man toast examples abound every where.  I used this site, Best Man Wedding Toasts for my last 2 speeches to the bride and groom and I was able to prepare my toast in less than an hour.

Write a basic outline on a note pad

After looking at several examples online, I jot down all my thoughts and ideas on a yellow legal pad.  I like to use yellow because it lets me know that this is an important event.  I like to start out introducing myself and letting people know how the groom and I became friends.  I say a bunch of nice things about him.  I add some fun humor into the mix.  It’s more of story about our friendship and how he eventually asked his girl friend to marry him.

Record your speech on a digital video camera

I found recording my speech really helped.  I could go through the entire talk and not get nervous.  I usually need to do this only once.  It’s not like I am giving a professional speech.  I want to sound natural.  Most new digital cameras have a video recording option.  You don’t have upload it to your pc to watch it.  Just look at the preview screen on the back of the camera.

Be as engaging as possible with the wedding guests.  Make as much eye contact as possible and smile.  You don’t have to be a great speaker to give a fantastic wedding toast.  Keep your talk light and lively.  Laughing will cure all problems.  Make a few mistakes, stutter, and a few ahhs to sound natural.

Be funny but don’t embarrass anyone-especially the bride and the mother of the bride.  You don’t want a family feud on your hands.  The online sites will have some great one liner jokes.  You can change and add names to fit your specific occasion.

Something else you need to consider when giving the best man toast speech is not to out do the groom.  What I mean is don’t try to give a super funny speech if the groom is not into humor.  This is the bride and groom’s day.  While I personally love to be funny and well liked, it would sort of tick off the groom if people talked more about the toast by best man.

Another thing is to never embarrass the bride.  I am a married man and I never embarrass my wife.  It is just not proper.   Women are women.  This is the Bride’s day.  While you may think something is funny, if you embarrass her, you will have the entire entourage, parents, and pretty much every woman pissed off at you.

You were picked to be the best man for many reasons.  Try to be inspirational and witty.  Error on the side of telling something sort of stupid that the couple did like the groom loosing his wallet on the first date and making her pay for everything.  This will score points with the bride.

Something else to consider is to be careful of the families.  They may look like they all get along but we are now talking in laws.  Don’t start a family fight that may never end.  Don’t say anything about either of the mothers unless it is really nice and sweet.

I know that I had to remind myself that the wedding speech was not about me-it was about the bride and the groom.

Go ahead and say a funny toast to the groom as long as it’s clean.  He will love it.  I know that I sure did on my wedding day.

Do your home work and prepare well for the speech.  Be thorough (probably better than I did!).  With that said be careful of the alcohol.   This has the potential to make a fool of you and the entire wedding party.   Even if you think you can hold alcohol, wait until after you give the wedding toast and speech.  Personally, I waited until the speech was over and I am so glad that I did.

I am almost embarrassed to tell you about my first best man toast.  In fact, I sort of screwed up everything from not planning a bachelor party to not preparing any best man wedding speech for the toast!!  I have to admit and tell you that I honestly did not know.  No kidding.  The only weddings that I was ever in was my younger brother and sister’s.   I pretty much showed up-white socks and all.
